William C. Hendricks papers, 1849-1929.

Consists of personal and business correspondence, diaries, and legal documents relating to mining claims in Butte County, Calif., together with political correspondence, newspaper clippings, and other papers pertaining to Hendricks's terms as State Senator (1873-1877), State Prison Director (1883-1887), and Secretary of State of the State of Calif. (1887-1889). Includes correspondence and clippings pertaining to prison reform, as well as legislation on the preservation of trees, and letters from John Muir. A small amount of material, particularly obituary clippings, relatesto other members of the Hendricks family.
